Sustainable Event Decor That’s Balloon Free

Planning large scale events that are made with 100% handmade decor seems like an impossibility, but at Papercraft Miracles it’s our bread and butter.

It’s becoming more common for large companies and organizations to move away from traditional event decor and corporate gifting. Efforts are being made all around to be more sustainable and investing in decor that is reusable while also still being eye-catching.

This is exactly what the University of Buffalo did for their 2026 Henry J. Panasci Jr. Technology and Entrepreneurship Competition. Their focus was on decor that wouldn’t be wasteful, like your typical balloon arch but would still create a bold and fun atmosphere for the guests. Our team helped them achieve this by building large displays from our handmade crepe paper flowers and craft paper to build large scale photo backdrops, table centerpieces and welcome area decor.

The pieces made for this event were specifically designs to be on brand for the University’s Startup and Innovation Co-Laboratory (aka the Co-Lab) but without being event specific. They were also designed to not be permanently attached together so the floral pieces could be taken apart and reused in different configurations over and over again. All the pieces of this decor were saved by the UB Co-Lab and used for the rest of their other end of the year events and will continue to be re-used for years to come.

A perfect example of this repurposing, is the Welcome sign you see below. We made this sign for the Co-Lab offices last year and because it was designed with sustainability in mind, they were able to bring it over to this event and use it for the Welcome area, and then safely return it to their offices to keep the welcoming vibe going over there.

Helping organizations to be more sustainable while still creating a meaningful experience for the guests is not easy, but this work is so rewarding because we know that it actually makes a difference. Through seed-paper signage at the event, guests were able to learn about the decor and the sustainability practices that went into putting the event together and going forward, they all now know that an event can be both eco-friendly and magical at the same time.
