THE ART OF BUSINESS & THE BUSINESS OF ART
ONLINE COURSE
Learn more about what to expect from our new comprehensive self-paced masterclass in creative entrepreneurship, brought to you by Papercraft Miracles founder, Janna Willoughby-Lohr, and BGP Learning founder, Becky Goldberg Petty.
The Art of Business & The Business of Art: Online Masterclass for Creatives. I created this self-guided course to combine the knowledge and experience I have gained by developing my own major in college integrating business and art, with my 20 years experience being a working artist, with my 10+ years of running a business.
This course has all the nitty-gritty business info and resources but, more importantly, contains a whole section on developing a growth mindset as an artist to overcome the starving artist mentality.
Funds from the sale of this course will be used to create professional development experiences for minority and women-owned creatives. We have also created the Mama Birdie Childcare Fund to provide childcare at these and other professional development events.

What’s inside
Part 1: The Art
Chapter 1: Welcome to Your Future
Chapter 2: Janna’s Story
Chapter 3: Defining Success
We live in a world that has glorified one type of success. But for the world to progress, success needs to look different for everyone. How I define success has nothing to do with the goals and dreams you have for yourself, which is why I think it’s so important to learn how to plan for success on your own terms.
Chapter 4: The Decision to Monetize
There is a world of difference between art as your passion and art as your livelihood.
Chapter 5: The Pragmatics
It’s fun to dream big, but then you actually need to make it happen. Let’s talk about the first few things you need to have in order before you launch your business - a name, digital presence, and funding.
Chapter 6: The Practicality
There are two key factors to consider when determining if you want to monetize your art. The first is whether you are pricing your art correctly. The second is whether you can make enough art (and market it and sell it) to make a living.
Chapter 7: The Psychology of the Choice
Selling art is about so much more than just putting a price tag on something and hoping someone takes it home. It’s about getting into the mind of your potential collector. Why do people collect art in the first place? What drives them to pick *your* piece over someone else’s?
Chapter 8: The Art Versus the Artist
I’ve always seen myself as an artist, but my identity as a business owner and leader grew through building my business.
Chapter 9: Being Your Own Biggest Fan
Here’s the thing—if you don’t believe in your art, how can you expect anyone else to? Being your own biggest fan is essential, especially when you’re trying to make a living from your creativity. It’s not about being arrogant; it’s about embracing the fact that what you create has value. And that starts with *you*.
Part 2: The Business
Chapter 10: Writing Your Executive Summary
You will learn how to write an executive summary. You can think of this as the one to two sentences that best summarize your business. It’s like the hook or the intro to your business that draws people in.
Chapter 11: Developing Your Revenue Structure
What that means is we’re going to create a roadmap of how you’re going to make money. Because we are never just selling art. The products we create are what we are shaping this business into, but what you are really selling is yourself. Your skill set, your knowledge, all of that is valuable, and when you’re developing revenue streams you need to take all of those things into consideration.
Chapter 12: Systems and Processes
You will learn how to set up systems and processes to do things such as process sales and transactions, managing payroll and hiring, shipping and product fulfillment and more.
Chapter 13: All the Damn Paperwork
You will learn step-by-step instructions on how to properly file paperwork to get your business officially registered with the government.
Chapter 14: Research and Development
How to conduct market research and develop unique products to distinguish yourself from the competition.
Chapter 15: Positioning Yourself for Success
An overview of the three most important aspects of positioning yourself in the market - an ideal client profile, building your brand, and establishing your presence.
Chapter 16: Your Ideal Client Profile
An in-depth guide covering the 12 key aspects to consider when developing the ideal client profile for your business.
Chapter 17: Building a Brand
Learn how to successfully create and communicate the story of your business.
Chapter 18: Establishing Your Presence
Key tips on how to utilize digital platforms to build an engaging online presence.
Part 3: Putting it All Together
Chapter 19: Finding Resources
An in-depth overview of ways to find funding and other crucial resources to support your business.
Chapter 20: Success is Your WHOLE Self
The importance of caring for your WHOLE self and the impact it has on your business.
Chapter 21: Some Parting Words
